Hot Summer in the City
The movie that Quentin Tarantino called "the best porno ever" began as an idea from a college paper written by Gail Palmer. Palmer, who was studying at Michigan State University at the time, would go on to produce a number of well-known and commerically successful adult films in the 70's and 80's. Hot Summer in the City, however, stands out from the rest of the pack.
Filmed in 1976, with memories of the Detroit race riots still vivid in the imagination, Hot Summer in the City took the exploitation movies of the 60's and 70's to a new level. So called "sexploitation" movies took hold during the sexual revolution of the 60's. No longer content with teasing audiences with skirts being blown up starlets' legs, younger film makers were looking for ways to push the sexual envelope. Gratuitous nudity and sexual themes became staples of the cheaply made movies being shown in drive-ins across the country. The civil rights movement - complete with Black Power and "jive" - provided the emphasis for "Blaxploitation" movies of the early 70's.
Gail Palmer, billing herself as "the Hare", took those themes and rolled them into a hardcore classic. The story opens with doe-eyed blonde Debby, played by Lisa Baker, making out with her boyfriend in his car. The Internet Movie Data Base says that this is the same Lisa Baker who was Playboy's Playmate of the Year in 1967. That would have made her 33 years old when this movie was shot. If that is the case, she looked remarkably young for her age. (clicking on any of the pictures will enlarge them)
When he tries to put his hand up her skirt, she pushes him away, reminding him (and informing us) that she is still a virgin. He vows his love to her in spite of her rejection and they finish their date. Debby goes inside where she is shocked to see her mother engaged in threesome with two men.
Our little virgin is so horrified by what she sees that she runs from the house in order to sort out her thoughts. While walking down the road, she is approached by a carful of young black men who insult, then kidnap her as the neighbors turn away.
Once she is in the car, the leader of the group rapes her.
Arriving at the hideout, Duke, the leader of the gang, announces that Debby is his girl. In classical "roughie" film form, he slaps her into submitting to caring for the gang while she is there. The others, of course, want to take advantage of their hostage and they determine that they will play poker to win the right to have her.
Shorty and Coke win the game. Shorty beats Debby violently with a belt while the others hold her down. Then he and Coke rape her together while Stitch, the mentally retarded member of the gang jerks off watching and waits for a turn.
